The Uruguayan company Remolques y Lanchas is part of Boluda Corporación Marítima

The maritime logistics world is in mourning on Wednesday 7 April for the death aged 71 of Manuel Varela Hermida, managing director of Remolques y Lanchas (REYLA) in Montevideo.

Manuel began his professional career in the Directorate of Merchant Marine of the General Naval Command (Technical Commission of the Department) and in the National Cadastre of the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uruguay.

He joined the administrative staff of REYLA (Remolcadores y Lanchas, SA) at the tender age of 20 years old, becoming general manager in 1986 and later on secretary to the board of directors.

In 2004, when REYLA became part of Grupo Boluda, Manuel Varela was appointed board secretary and managing director.

His fifty years of service to the Corporation were combined with other sector-related activities. He was an active member of the Uruguayan Maritime League and the Maritime Navigation Centre and was vice president of the Chamber of National Maritime Merchants (Seafarers Union).

The passing away of Manuel Varela has elicited great sorrow in the port sector, inspiring messages of condolence from a wide variety of companies in the sector.

Our most sincere condolences to his son Fernando Varela, a colleague in the REYLA Administration Department, and to all the members of his family.
