Alfonso Serrat, president of Boluda Lines: “We will provide 50% greater freight capacity in the Mediterranean, also increasing frequency and reducing times, as a clear commitment to connecting the Canaries with the mainland”
Why has Boluda Maritime Corporation opted to strengthen this route?
The increased demand we have noticed in recent months led us to expand the route, thus meeting one of our Corporation’s maxims: commitment to our customers and responding to their needs.
What does this expansion involve?
We have opted principally to increase route capacity. At Boluda we believe it is essential to be in touch with and listen to our customers in order to improve and meet their needs. Specifically we have increased the capacity of TEUs (mostly reefers) by 50%: a notable improvement in freight transportation between the mainland and the Canary Islands.
So new vessels will be incorporated…
Indeed they will. The capacity increase will come from the addition of two new container ships, the “Nordcheetah” and “Nordluchs”, two modern sister ships 170 meters long and 28 wide with a capacity of 1,400 14-tonne TEUs.
As well as these new ships, in recent months Boluda Lines has added 2,500 new units to its range of containers, significantly enhancing quality of service.
Will transit times be reduced?
The current route is Alicante-Barcelona-Valencia-Santa Cruz de Tenerife- Las Palmas- Tenerife- La Palma and Alicante. With the new service, both Barcelona on Fridays and Valencia on Saturdays will reach Tenerife on Tuesdays and Las Palmas on Wednesdays.
Will this mean an improvement for the Islands?
The Canary Islands is a strategic location in the shipping business and for our corporation a presence in the archipelago is crucial, not only as a port enclave but also to promote growth and wealth creation on the Islands. As leaders in the freight sector we believe that reinforcing this route will enable us to offer improved customer service.
Services between the Peninsula and the Canary Islands also include a direct Alicante-Canarias service and departures four times per week from Seville.
In addition to improving the Mediterranean route, the North route service capacity will also increase with the addition of two vessels: Beatriz B and Verónica B.
When will these changes take place?
The new ships will be in service immediately, starting from 12 August in Barcelona. This major undertaking once again consolidates Boluda Corporación Marítima’s position as sector leader.
